'Not, Not Gay' DJ Diplo 'Rawdogs' Mt. Fuji Without Missing a Beat
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
DJ Diplo made headlines last year when he defined his sexuality as "not, not gay" in a conversation with Emily Ratajkowski for an episode of her podcast "High Low." In the interview she asked him to open up about having told her earlier that he's "a little gay." He answered by saying he doesn't "want to define that [he's] gay." Adding, "I think the best answer I have is I'm not not gay. There are a couple guys ... I could date, life partner-wise." He added that gender was less important than the vibe he was feeling from a partner. "The temperature of our culture has changed" with men being more "fluid," he explained. "[When I was young], you had gay kids at school and gay cousins or whatever, but it was different than it is now. I thought it was, like, weird to be gay."
This week Diplo is making headlines again, but not due to his sexuality. Instead the reason was the 45-year-old fitness enthusiast (who has his own run club that runs events all over the United States) "rawdogged" Japan's iconic peak Mt. Fuji, reported the website Pride. No, the term has nothing to do with barebacking, rather it is a TikTok trend in which air travelers sit silently and screen-free on long-haul stints in the sky.
In Diplo's case, it meant climbing the 4,834 feet of elevation without preparation and in one day. It is recommended that climbers allot 10 hours for the trip (6 for the ascent, 4 for the descent); he did both in an impressive 3 hours and 36 minutes.
Diplo ignored the requirements suggested by the official Mt. Fuji tourism guide, which advises bringing "proper hiking shoes, a hat, gloves, rainwear, a jacket, quick-drying underwear, a headlamp, trash bags, a walking stick, food, and spending money," as well as "at least two liters of drinking water," Pride said.
In the caption of a clip of him nearing the summit, Diplo joked: "rawdogging the experience," and added that he's "Super happy I didn't bring water or a backpack or the right shoes."
This wasn't the first time Diplo "rawdogged" an athletic event. "It's the same way he tackled the LA Marathon, before which he had never run more than a half marathon. No specialty gear, no intense training, just Diplo and his dream against the world," Pride said.
