AI-Generated 'Seinfeld' Went Transphobic and Got Banned from Twitch
Artificial intelligence might be faster, smarter and miles ahead of human intelligence, but it can still be dumb as evidenced by a recent joke that appeared in the AI generated "Seinfeld" spoof, "Nothing, Forever."
As reported by IndieWire, the viral, self-aware Twitch series made a joke in a similar vein of a Jerry Seinfeld standup setup. But things went sour.
"I am actually thinking about doing a bit about how being transgender is actually a mental illness, or about how all liberals are secretly gay and want to impose their will on everyone," said the AI generated comedian Larry Feinberg. "Or something about how transgender people are ruining the fabric of society. But no one is laughing, so I am going to stop. Thanks for coming out tonight. See you next time. Where did everybody go?"
Crickets. And now the series has been banned for 14 days. Co-creators of the series Skyler Hartle and Brian Habersberger took to Discord (via Vice) to comment on the developing situation.
"We've appealed the ban, and we'll let you know as we know more on what Twitch decides," the duo explained. "Regardless of the outcome of the appeal, we'll be back and will spend the time working to ensure to the best of our abilities that nothing like that happens again."
According to the "Nothing, Forever" staff, the switched AI model was to blame for the "errant behaviors" of the characters in the series.
The series was reportedly using OpenAI's GPT-3 Davinci model when it started glitching.
"When davinci started failing, we switched over to Curie to try to keep the show running without any downtime," a staff member explained. "The switch to Curie was what resulted in the inappropriate text being generated. We leverage OpenAI's content moderation tools, which have worked thus far for the Davinci model, but were not successful with Curie."
IndieWire reports, another staff member added, "I would like to add that none of what was said reflects the devs' (or anyone else on the staff team's) opinions."
