Watch: 'American Idol' Contestant Comes Out During Moving Original Song

Wednesday Mar 20, 2019

A contestant on "American Idol" is making headlines this week after coming out as gay during a performance of an original song.

Known as Jorgie, the singer introduced his band Jorgie and the Jorgies and sang a cover of judge Katy Perry's "California Gurls" but it was a rough go.

"Do I sound like I yodel?" she asked fellow judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. "Is that my signature sound?"

He apologized to Perry and told her that her song "I Kissed a Girl" inspired him to come out.

"Knowing that [same-sex relationships] could be mainstream, that helped me so much," he said.

He then said his father didn't know he is gay and then launched into an original song called "Heaven." Jorgie said the song is about a boy he had a crush on who also wasn't sure about his sexual identity.

The judges were blown away by the singer and all gave him a "yes" to move on to the next round.

Last week a gay church janitor made headlines for wowing the "American Idol" judges. Click here to read that story.
